Notes about Therese Antoinette Maria Joseph Schijns
Clergy Klooster Gooreind
After World War II ended, word is not received from Therese until 9 January 1946, a card dated 10 July 1945. That card states that 'the convent was damaged, but that she was 'corresponding' making good at the time. It was not until 24 January that they received more detailed news, dated 7 December. "Therese also had a very hard time, first living close to the front for quite a while and on Easter night the Russians moved in. One of the nuns was shot dead in front of all the others. They buried her themselves with other war casualties in the field behind the garden, while the farms were burning all around. Therese had also been beaten, she had collapsed but was not unconscious. Later they were on the run for about six weeks - the first 14 days they lived with 200 others in a sand quarry, then later in a destroyed village. When they returned, their convent had been totally plundered."
