Notes about August Coletus Marie Grielen

August acquired Dutch nationality on 7 Jun 1950, despite being born in Tilburg.

In 1923, the Belgian Consul provides proof of identity to August. At the same time, from 2 January of the same year, he is also "in actual service" with the Dutch Landweer. That was an organisation where young men participated in training in military skills. According to his military pocketbook, he has had the rank of corporal since November 1924, he is incorporated on 3 May 1926 as a conscript and intended for the training of non-commissioned officer. At the end of September 1926 he went on a large leave, to come up for two more weeks in 1931 for repetition. On 29 August 1939, as part of the mobilisation, he was summoned for military service and stationed in the northeastern part of Brabant, near Herpen / Ravenstein.

After the war, in August 1946, there was a message from Turnhout that he was registered in the "yard reserve": for the Belgian state, August, a Belgian and therefore available for military service. In Belgium, he consulted the Belgian Consul (who then still had an office in Breda). They heard his story (married, with four young children, conscription already completed in the Netherlands and worked as a Dutch civil servant) and gave him two recommendations: ·Äú1. Do not show up in Belgium" and "2. Submit a request for naturalisation as quickly as possible."

August was considered "stateless" for Dutch law and "Belgian" for the Belgian state. It has never become clear how - in the often over-organised Netherlands - it was compatible with Dutch military service (including mobilisation) and the status of civil servant, for one "stateless person" neither the one nor the other is possible. In the end, the naturalisation procedure was initiated and, according to the concepts at the time, completed fairly quickly. Law No K 205 was published in the Official Gazette on 7 June 1950.
