Under the name Naarus, Bernard de Pont wrote about thirty columns for the magazine Groot Tilburg during the war years. Naarus was a true Tilburger. After he left his hometown and moved to Oosterbeek, he regularly sent contributions to Groot Tilburg, mixing his memories of Tilburg and the people of Tilburg with the nostalgia of the outsider who misses his homeland. Moreover, the difficult war conditions give Naarus' columns an unexpected glimpse into the zeitgeist of the 1940s. Naarus was born on April 7, 1897 and died on October 2, 1975. In one of his most striking columns he expresses the wish that he would prefer to be buried in Tilburg, namely 'On the banks of the Leij, in the middle of the people whom I have loved so much.'
Naarus was the first Tilburger to have his pieces published in the local dialect in a newspaper. The CuBra website is pleased to be able to breathe new life into the work of Naarus. However, Naarus' last wish was never fulfilled. He died in Oosterbeek, where he is buried.
