De vermoedelijke vader van Grietje Kouwer, Pieter Kouwer, kwam uit Jisp, en zeelieden uit Jisp speelden een belangrijke rol in de walvisvaart. Ook Den Hoorn op Texel was daar bekend voor. Het is dus goed mogelijk, dat Olfert Omes en Grietje Kouwer elkaar gevonden hebben dankzij de bijzondere economische activiteiten van hun vaders.
