Jan van Arkel speelde een belangrijke rol in de Arkelse oorlog (1401-1412). Hierbij leverde hij strijd met hoofdzakelijk de graaf van Holland. Uiteindelijk moesten de 'Arkelsen' het onderspit delven. Jan V van Arkel verloor zijn bezittingen, en moest de jaren 1415-1426 doorbrengen in gevangenschap. Enkele jaren later overleed hij (1428).
