Uit het boekje "750 jaar Van der Spank – Van der Spanck – Van der Spanct Een Schijndelse familie van Rooise afkomst": Piet had twee zonen Jan (1904) en Andreas (1906) die hem aanvankelijk hielpen in zijn timmermansbedrijf. Jan werd later aannemer en bouwde vele huizen in Aalst-Waalre. In de crisisjaren na 1930 verging het hem niet goed en begon hij een handelsmaatschappij in benzine. Beide zaken gingen failliet. Bovendien overleed Jan wegens ziekte in 1937, zijn vrouw Maria met vijf kinderen (Piet, Iny, Tiny, Mia en Annie) zonder inkomen achterlatend.
De oorlog was zeker geen gemakkelijke tijd voor dit gezin, maar de tegenslag leerde de kinderen ook iets te maken van het leven.
