Marian A. (Marriner) Ostler
( August 08, 1943 - February 28, 2018 )

Marian Arlene (Marriner) Ostler, age 74, passed away Wed., Feb. 28, 2018 at Symphony of Orchard Valley in Aurora, IL after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Marian was born on a hot summer day Aug. 8, 1943 in Chicago, IL to Charles and Violet (Fellows) Marriner. A few years later, her dad built a rustic home on Rt 53 in Lisle, IL that included two bedrooms, a water pump, and an outhouse, and the family quickly expanded.

Marian was the oldest of 8 children and she attended Lisle Elementary School and later graduated from Lisle Community High School in 1962. She received accolades for drama, did well in English, mediocre in science, and completely failed trigonometry. All of which would have no bearing on the degrees she would obtain later in life.

While on a boat tour of Chicago for a church event, Patrick Ostler caught her eye. He was serving in the Air Force during Vietnam. They continued their courtship while he was on leave and Marian wrote him regularly when he was back in France. She graciously noted her ring size on the outside of one of her envelopes and in turn he mailed her a ring.

Patrick and Marian were married the summer of 1967 after Patrick finished his service, and they settled in Grand Ridge then later purchased an old farm house in rural Ottawa, IL where they raised their 7 children.

While in Ottawa, Marian worked as a waitress at the Boat Club, taught preschool at the YMCA, and later served as the building supervisor. She also began attending IVCC where she received her associates degree and began a passion for education that spanned more than ten years and three universities, receiving a BA in Geology and an MS in Special Education.

Marian loved painting, reading mysteries, studying rock formations, watching British comedies, taking nature hikes, and laughing with her family. She was her children’s biggest champion. Kind and loving, she embodied a sweetness that even Alzheimer’s could not strip away. She’s already dearly missed.

Marian is survived by her children Teresa Ostler of Incline Village, NV; Caroline (Tom) Kraus of Montgomery, IL; Sandra (Jeff) Stoudt of Marseilles, IL; Barbara Ostler of Eagan, MN; Michael (Josie) Ostler of Rockton, IL; Katie Ostler of Harvard, IL; and Dave (Angie) Ostler of Love’s Park, IL; and her 19 grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Bob (Nancy) Marriner, Tim (Steve Olandese) Marriner, Tom (Jill) Marriner, Rita (Ernie) Arriaga, Toni (Scott) Schwake, Mary (Ken) Osowski, and John Marriner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Violet (Fellows) Marriner.

Visitation will be held on Tue., Mar. 6 from 4 to 7 pm at Ottawa Funeral Home 1111 LaSalle Street in Ottawa, Illinois. A memorial service will follow on Wed., Mar. 7 at 10:00 a.m. at St Columba Catholic Church 122 W. Washington St. Ottawa, IL, with burial to follow at St. Columba Cemetery 1800 N 2990th Rd, Ottawa, IL. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
