Klaas van der Ploeg en Dina van Zuijlen vestigden zich op 23-9-1901 op de Trekvaart 4 te Hillegom. Hij vestigde zich als tuinder en huurde daarom land van Jan Ruijgrok. In de jaren dat het wat slechter ging met de bollen was Klaas niet in staat de huur van het land te betalen. Omdat Klaas zo hard werkte mocht hij de huur later betalen wanneer het wat beter ging. Jaren later ging het zo goed dat hij zelfs het land van Jan Ruijgrok kon kopen.Tot het eind van zijn leven is het land zijn eigendom gebleven. Klaas van der Ploeg teelde groente o.a grote bonen, selderie en boontjes en bollen narcissen en tulpen.
