Bij de wierde stond vroeger de boerderij (heerdstede) Bolhuis. Hiervan resteert nog het koetshuis en de tuinmanswoning.
De kroniekschrijver Abel Eppens werd in Eekwerd geboren. Hij heeft onder meer de heerdstede Bolhuis bewoond.
