Hij is tijdens het ophangen van het vaantje op de Maassluisse Logger MA 64, van de reederij Buijnink, uit de mast gevallen. Dit gebeurde om klokslag 12.00 uur. Hij kwam op de kade terecht en stuitte daarop af en viel vervolgens in de haven. Hij was op slag dood.

Uit de Maassluische Courant van 31 dec. 1919 nr. 104: Doodgevallen. A. v. d. H., een 20-jarig Maassluizer, aangemonsterd door de reederij-Buynink alhier, was Dinsdagmiddag behulpzaam bij het in gereedheid brengen van de MA 64, welke Maandag a.s. uitvaart. Hij bevond zich boven in den mast. Klokslag 12 uur hoorden de andere schepelingen een gil. Naar boven kijkend zagen zij den jongen man met het hoofd omlaag naar beneden vallen. Hij kwam terecht op de glooiïng van den loswal, stuitte daarop af en viel vervolgens in de Haven. De spoedig aanwezige geneeskundigen konden slechts den dood constateeren.".
