In 1929 he became a member of Ficksburg Town Council in the Public Works Department
Hendrik Cornelius, the eldest son worked as a blacksmith from 1888 to 1889, first at Lindley and later at Senekal in the Orange Free State. At the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War in 1899, he joined the Boers as a burger and fought until the end of hostilities in 1902. On 21st June 1900 he played a prominent part in the capture of Lord Longford of the Irish Yeomanry (at Lindley). After
the war he returned to Ficksburg where he resumed his trade as blacksmith.
