    Op 23 februari was de pink De Jonge Arend van reder Arend van der Toorn met als stuurman Job Taal vanaf het Scheveningse strand naar zee vertrokken voor de visserij. Op de 27e brak de storm los. Enkele in de nabijheid vissende pinken, die de Jonge Arend eerder nog bij daglicht hadden gezien, zagen de ochtend van de 28e nog slechts enkele voorwerpen drijven die van de Jonge Arend afkomstig moesten zijn.
