    BENNEKOM - Het is in 1941 niet alleen oorlog op land, maar ook op zee, Duitse duikboten loeren op een kans om een geallieerd koopvaardijschip tot zinken te brengen. Daarom varen schepen tussen Engeland en Amerika in konvooi, begeleid door marineschepen. Op 31 oktober 1944 schiet een Duitse onderzeeboot raak: het Nederlandse koopvaardijschip de SS Bennekom is zo'n 560 mijl ten westen van Ierland, midden op de Atlantische Oceaan, als het door de U-96 getorpedeerd wordt.

    Van de 56 opvarenden komen er negen om in de golven. Zes van hen zijn vrijwillig overboord gesprongen om naar een in zee drijvend dekluik te zwemmen als blijkt dat er te weinig plaats is in het laatste reddingsvlot. De onderzeeboot die de SS Bennekom tot zinken brengt is later bekend geworden als Das Boot. In 1981 is er een speelfilm over de U-96 gemaakt, op basis van het boek van Lothar-Günther Buchham.
