Anton is op zijn 12e begonnen als tuinarbeider. 's Avonds leerde hij voor politieagent, maar eenmaal zijn diploma op zak begon de crisis en daarna brak WO II uit. Toen hij na de oorlog solliciteerde, hoorde hij dat hij met zijn 40 jaar te oud was...
Anton was jarenlang voorzitter van de christelijk Landarbeiderbond en gemeenteraadslidslid voor de Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU.
Als jongeman was hij al lid van het in 1920 opgerichte mannenokoor EMM (Eendracht Maakt Macht).
