Notes about Maria van der Brugge

Maria van der Brugge was lerares van beroep, en lange tijd directrice van de Huishoudschool in Middelburg.

Alhoewel ze haar functie als directrice heeft afgelegd toen de school echt gestalte kreeg. Ze was vooral lerares.

Korte levensbeschrijving mbt haar carrière :
Reeds bij haar huwelijk blijkt haar beroep 'lerares' te zijn. Maar aangezien in die tijd een huwelijk betekende dat een vrouw niet meer kon werken, heeft ze jaren met haar man een broodbakkerszaak gerund in Vlaardingen; tot zijn voortijdig overlijden.
Haar man was Karel Johan Poortman (1859-1898), hij overlijdt op 14 september 1898 te Vlaardingen, 39 jaar oud. Ze hadden 6 kinderen gekregen, waarvan er toen nog 5 leefden. Enkele jaren later heeft ze opnieuw een opleiding gevolgd. Op haar 44ste behaalde ze haar diploma 'Kookschoollerares' aan de Kook- en Huishoudschool in Rotterdam (in 1905). Ze werd vervolgens direct na het behalen haar diploma, aangesteld als directrice van de 'nog op te richten' Huishoudschool in Middelburg.
In 1905 verhuisde ze naar Middelburg. Maria heeft in Middelburg gewoond van 1905-1919. Vanaf 1910-1919 in ons huis.

De oprichting van de Huishoudschool gebeurde op initiatief van enkele lokale verenigingen. Zij hadden Maria van der Brugge aangesteld als directrice. Maar in feite was ze directrice-lerares ineen. Ze moesten de boel van de grond af aan opbouwen. Er waren nog weinig middelen, weinig geld. Maar beginnend met 9 leerlingen, bouwde ze zo jaar na jaar wat meer op. Pas toen ze eindelijk gemeentelijke subsidie kregen, na vele jaren strijd en verzet konden ze in 1917 een gebouw als schoolgebouw inrichten. Dit was tevens het moment dat Maria, stopte als directrice. Maar wel nog les bleef geven en heel wat demonstraties gaf.

Hierna is ze via Rotterdam naar Den haag verhuisd, waar ze nog 13 jaar gewoond heeft (van 1922-1937). Tot haar overlijden in Genk.
