Notes about Arend Hendrik van der Pijl

Arend wordt geboren op 25 maart 1895 in Breda en woont in Medan op Sumatra. Op 8 december 1941, een dag na de aanval op Pearl Harbor, verklaart de Nederlandse regering vanuit Londen Japan de oorlog. De Japanners grijpen dit aan om Nederlands-Indië direct binnen te vallen. Vanwege zijn natuurlijke oliebronnen en geostrategische ligging is de verovering van de Nederlandse kolonie voor de Japanners een van de belangrijkste doelen om Oost-Azië te overheersen. Tegen deze achtergrond meldt Arend zich voor militaire dienst bij het KNIL en wordt als reserve 1e luitenant ingezet bij de verdediging van de kolonie.

Na een veldtocht van drie maanden hebben de Japanners de belangrijkste strategische punten in de archipel ingenomen. Op 8 maart 1942 capituleert het KNIL op Java; Arend wordt op 17 maart krijgsgevangen genomen en samen met duizenden andere Nederlandse militairen afgevoerd naar de kampen. Het is niet bekend of Arend als dwangarbeider is ingezet aan de Birma-spoorlijn, of dat hij doorgezonden is naar de kampen op Japan, om daar in de mijnen te werken.

Arend maakt de Japanse capitulatie op 15 augustus 1945 nog mee, maar tegen die tijd is hij als gevolg van jarenlange mishandeling, ziekte, uitputting en ondervoeding in krijgsgevangenschap ernstig verzwakt geraakt. Na zijn bevrijding wordt hij gerepatrieerd en staat op het punt terug te keren naar Nederlands-Indië, waar twee dagen na de Japanse capitulatie de Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsstrijd is losgebarsten. Daar zou hij opnieuw ingezet worden voor militaire dienst, maar uiteindelijk komt het voor Arend niet zo ver. Op 21 september 1945 overlijdt hij in Singapore aan de gevolgen van jarenlange ontberingen in de kampen. Hij is 50 jaar geworden en vindt zijn laatste rustplaats op het Nederlands ereveld Leuwigajah in Cimahi.
