Notes about Abraham du Bois

Jacob DuBois was the third born child to Louis and Catherine DuBois and their first born on what is now U.S. soil.

Louis was leader of a group of French Huguenots who purchased 40,000 acres of Hudson Valley land from the Esopus Indians in 1677. The following year, Louis and his two eldest sons, Abraham and Isaac, along with nine other Huguenot gentlemen, received a patent from the English governor to establish the town of New Paltz, NY there.

Jacob married Lyzbeth Varnoye on 8 Mar 1689. After Lyzbeth's death in 1690, Jacob married Gerritje Gerritsen Van Nievwkirk around 1691. Jacob and Gerritje had many children, including a son named Gerrit on 13 Dec 1704.

Jacob lived all of his long life on the farm at Hurley. His name appears as a member of the Hurley Company in 1715 and as one of the Town Trustees in 1719. He was a freeholder of Hurley in 1728 (Doc Hist of N.Y.) About 1714 he heard that there was a largequantity of good land for sale lin the sounthern part of New Jersey. He took a trip to Salem County and with his sister and John and Isaac Van Meteren purchased 3000 acres of Daniel Cox of Burlington. His sister and her sons John and Isaac Van Meteren in1716 conveyed 1200 acres to Jacov DuBois as his share. There is no record that Jacob ever lived in Jersey. Barent, one of his sons, settled at Pilegrove, Salem Co., later called Pittsgrove.

Jacob lived in the Hurley, NY area and died there on 7 June 1745 in his 84th year. Though his life is paid tribute in multiple cemeteries, he is buried at Old Hurley Burial Ground.
