Jan Bos wordt in maart 1942, in Poerworedjo (Java), krijgsgevangen gemaakt door de Japanners. Hij wordt, zoals zoveel gevangenen, onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden op transport gesteld naar Thailand. Hij komt terecht in een Japans krijgsgevangenkamp in Siam en wordt te werk gesteld aan de beruchte Burma-spoorlijn. Daar overlijdt hij al op 20 juli 1943 op 56-jarige leeftijd. Hij had een langdurig ziektebed ten gevolge van de ziekte dysenterie. In een verklaring van zijn doodsoorzaak worden de omstandigheden rond zijn overlijden als volgt omschreven:

'Vanuit Bampongm 75 kilometer ten westen van Bangkok en het eindpunt van den Burma-Siam spoorweg, werden begin 1943 verschillende werkgroepen naar boven gedirigeerd. Het transport ging gedeeltelijk per vrachtwagen, doch het grootste deel van den weg werd te voet afgelegd. Deze geforceerde marschen onder zeer ongunstige omstandigheden wat betreft voeding, ligging en medische verzorging waren fnuikend voor de gezondheid van velen. In de werkkampen waren de toestanden niet beter, zodat velen geen kans hadden om de gevolgen van het transport te boven te komen'. Ook wijlen Jan Bos behoorde hiertoe.'
