Een bijlage bij zijn huwelijksakte (zie foto 3) vermeldt dat hij op 9-3-1896 met lot nr 9 is ingelijfd in de nationale militie "en nog is dienende" en "op 1 A ugustus 1904 ... bestemd is geworden tot het bij de landweer volbrengen van den indat artikel vermelden verlengden diensttijd. 's-Hertogenbosch, 12-4-1905". Hij heet dan al wel landbouwer en wonende te Escharen. Was volgens militieregister 1,72 lang.
In die tijd was men 8 jaar dienstplichtig bij de Nationale militie en daarna bleef men 7 jaar 'landweerplichtig'. Wat dat 'en nog is dienende' precies betekent, is niet duidelijk: dienstplichtig of in werkelijke dienst. Wèl is hij volgens moeder enige jaren langer in dienst gebleven dan voor zijn nummer moest (Nr. 9 dus), eerst als huzaar, later als hospitaalsoldaat. Misschien om financieel onafhankelijk te worden? In het militieregister wordt als beroep vermeld: dienstknecht. Bij zijn huwelijk heet hij wel landbouwer.
