    Na de capitulatie van het Koloniaal leger werd hij eerst in diverse kampen op Java geïnterneerd. Later werd hij met andere kampgevangenen per Japans transportschip (beruchte Molukkentransport) naar de Molukken en het eiland Flores gebracht om onder verschrikkelijke omstandigheden te werken aan de aanleg van vliegvelden. Doordat er veel krijgsgevangenen overleden of ernstig ziek werden besloot het Japanse leger deze terug te brengen naar Java en te vervangen door nieuwe krachten.
    Opa Wim moest toen met (415) Engelse en (133) Nederlandse krijgsgevangenen aan boord van het Japanse schip "Suez "Maru". Het schip zou volgens de Internationale verdragen de Rode Kruis tekens voeren met grote letters PoW ( prisoners of War). De Japanners weigerden dit aan te brengen.
    Op 29 november 1943 werd ter hoogte van het eiland Kangean het schip door de Amerikaanse onderzeeboot "USS Bonefish" getorpedeerd waarop het schip ten onder ging. De meesten verdronken maar zij die het overleefden werden daarna allemaal door de Japanse Luitenant Koshio met mitrailleurvuur gedood, waaronder ook mijn opa.
