    Prins Willem II (1626-1650)
    Prins Willem II wordt in 1647 stadhouder. Al snel raakt hij betrokken bij een conflict over de inkrimping van het leger. Dat gebeurt na de ondertekening van de vrede in 1648, die een einde maakt aan de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Als Willem II in 1650 onverwacht overlijdt, benoemen de Staten van Holland en de meeste andere gewesten geen nieuwe stadhouder meer.

    Deze beslissing is relatief gemakkelijk; de enige zoon van Willem II wordt pas enkele dagen na de dood van zijn vader geboren.
