Joost Roelofs was molenaar en agent van Politie. Hij was een zoon van Adrianus Roelofs en Geertje van Nimwegen. Hij was getrouwd op 30 mei 1849 met Adriana Schouten, dochter van Engel Schouten en Grietje Wapenaar. Hij is geboren in Maassluis en was werkzaam en wonende te Vlaardingen. Het was in die tijd normaal dat een getuige bij een geboorte gewoon van de straat werd geplukt en agenten waren erg in trek. Joost is getuige geweest bij meerdere Vonsen
