Dirk Johan Houtzager was een zoon van Dirk Houtzager geb 3 januari 1833 te Delft. Dirk was Directeur der Gemeentebegraafplaats. Hij trouwde 22 augustus met Cornelia Mulder, geb 7 juli 1831 te Delft. Of er uit dit huwelijk kinderen zijn geboren is niet bekend, maar Cornelia overleed op 16 november 1864 te Delft op 33 jarige leeftijd.
Op 2 oktober 1867 trouwde Dirk te Delft met Hendrina Noordanus, geb 20 maart 1837 te Delft. Dit gezin kreeg 7 kinderen:

1- Adrianus Johannes Houtzager, geb 2 augustus 1868 te Delft en overleden 13 maart 1828 te Breda op 60 jarige leeftijd. Hij was getrouwd met Johanna Sophia van Hattem.
2- Helena Lydia Johanna Houtzager geb 7 maart 1870 te Delft en overleden 10 februari 1937 te Delft op 66 jarige leeftijd. Ze was ongehuwd.
3- Dirk Johan Houtzager geb 29 februari 1872 te Delft en overleden 26 september 1950 te Voorburg op 78 jarige leeftijd. Hij was getrouwd met Adriana Petronella Renaud
4- Hendricus Leonardus Houtzager geb 23 september 1873 te Delft en overleden 5 februari 1933 te Delft op 59 jarige leeftijd. Hij was getrouwd met Cornelia van Hattem.
