Tegen middernacht van Zondag op Maandag ontstond er brand op de vliering bij de heer Barend Bosman in de Schapesteeg. Op deze vliering werden duiven gehouden bij enige verwarming. De vlam sloeg reeds uit het dak, toen mensen op straat het onheil bemerkten. De bewoners werden snel gewaarschuwd en de brandweer gealarmeerd, die spoedig ter plaatse was. Ook de Burgemeester verscheen spoedig bij het brandje.

Ondertussen kwamen buren en mensen op straat vlug in actie. Emmers water werden vlot van hand tot hand gegeven en op die wijze gelukte het spoedig het brandje te blussen. De aangerichte schade was aan de woning niet groot. Maar helaas zijn de duiven verbrand. Door het flinke en hulpvaardige gezamenlijke optreden werd een groot onheil voorkomen. De brandweer behoefde niet over te gaan tot spuiten.
