Notes about Johan Willem van Saksen-Weimar

Na het overlijden van zijn vader werd hij hertog van Saksen, samen met zijn broer Johan Frederik II. Het land werd verdeeld in 1565 tussen beide broers. Johan Frederik II kreeg Saksen-Coburg en Johan Willem Saksen-Weimar. Door zijn pogingen om de verloren gebieden van zijn vader en de titel van keurvorst terug te winnen, haalde Johan Frederik II zich de woede op de hals van keizer Maximiliaan II en werd vanaf 1566 gevangengenomen tot het einde van zijn leven. Johan Willem werd hierdoor enig heerser in het hertogdom Saksen. Maar ook Johan Willem haalde zich de woede van de keizer op de hals, door mee te vechten aan de zijde van Karel IX van Frankrijk . Daarop voerde de keizer in 1572 de verdeling van Erfurt door , waardoor Johan Frederiks zonen Johan Casimir en Johan Ernst in de rechten van hun vader hersteld werden (verdeling van Erfurt) en de Ernestijnse bezittingen tussen hen en de zoons van Johan Willem werden verdeeld. Hiermede startten de talrijke Ernestijnse verdelingen en de verbrokkeling van Thüringen.

Johan Willem was de laatste hertog van Saksen en landgraaf van Thüringen en de eerste hertog van Saksen-Weimar.
