Note that if a child was illegitimate the birth record typically did not name the father, even if the father was known. This index also provides the register number—a unique number per record and year. The year and register number is necessary information for ordering a copy of the original birth record from the Stadsarchief Rotterdam (Rotterdam City Archives). The original record may provide additional information such as the residence, ages, and occupations of the parents, and information about the witnesses.
