De verhalen van J.W. Young doen qua inhoud denken aan de Chinees-Maleise

literatuur.

Het zijn gebeurtenissen die plaatsvinden binnen de Chinese gemeenschap in

Indië. Chinese schrijvers kenden in hun verhalen geen rol toe aan de Nederlanders, tenzij

als figuranten. Er wordt van Chinezen noch van Nederlanders een vijandbeeld geschetst.

De hoofdrolspelers zijn altijd Chinezen, en als er sprake is van minder goed gedrag bij de

Chinezen, dan zijn het altijd Chinezen die daar het slachtoffer van zijn. Dat is ook het

geval met de verhalen van Young. Anders dan sommige andere Nederlandse schrijvers,

heeft Young niet de pretentie de Chinezen zo goed te kennen dat hij denkt in hun naam te

kunnen spreken. Toch geeft hij blijk van inzicht in de denk- en handelwijze van de

Chinezen, vooral dan de economisch beter bedeelde Chinezen. Terloops maar scherp

schetst hij de verhouding tussen die Chinezen en de andere, armere Chinezen, die tegen

hun weldoeners opkijken. Als verklaring voor de grote rijkdommen van de Chinezen die

het tot opiumpachter brengen, wordt slechts verteld dat ze smokkelen en zowel inlandse

als Nederlandse ambtenaars omkopen. De Chinezen worden niet beschuldigd van

woekeren, de Javanen worden in Youngs verhalen niet eens genoemd. De

opiumschuivers zijn allemaal Chinezen. Toch klinkt er milde kritiek door in de verhalen.

Die kritiek geldt bijvoorbeeld de pronkzucht van sommige Chinezen.
