    Strafkamp in Oostenrijk nabij een steengroeve waar gevangenen zware lichamelijke arbeid moesten verrichten.

    Het kamppersoneel van Mauthausen was bijzonder wreed. De ontberingen eisten veelal binnen enkele dagen hun tol.
    Het kamp werd in februari 1941 een begrip in Nederland. Op 22 en 23 februari werd, naar aanleiding van een incident waarbij een NSB’er werd gedood, een grote razzia gehouden (de eerste in Nederland, en de aanleiding voor de Februaristaking). 425 joodse mannen werden opgepakt en naar Mauthausen gedeporteerd. Korte tijd later arriveerden de overlijdensberichten. Ook de mannen die werden opgepakt in de razzia’s in Gelderland en Overijssel, in september en oktober 1941, werden naar Mauthausen gedeporteerd en daar vermoord.
    Mauthausen was het enige concentratiekamp waarvan algemeen bekend was wat voor verschrikkingen er plaatsvonden. SS-hoofdman Rauter gebruikte het dreigement van deportatie naar Mauthausen om verzet tegen het regime de kop in te drukken.
