    i. AANWINST EN TEGENSLAG Voor het noviciaat waren de jaren 1886 tot en met 1890 niet ongunstig geweest. Vanuit de kweekschool begonnen na een achtdaagse retraite aan het noviciaat: frater M. Andreas Smit uit Dokkum (Friesland); frater M. Lebuïnus De Vent uit Steggerda (Friesland); frater M. Paulus Schwering uit Steggerda (Friesland); frater M. Joannes Berchmans uit Wychen (Gelderland); frater M. Dominicus De kleyn uit Wychen (Gelderland); frater M. Aloysius van Schaik uit Mijdrecht (Utrecht) ; frater M. Bonaventura Vredeveld uit Zwolle (Overijssel); frater M. Arsenius Ensink uit Franeker (Friesland); frater M. Jozef Sars uit Kerkdriel (Gelderland).Uit de wereld was ingetreden frater M. Clemens Lampe uit Sneek (Friesland). Na het voleinden van hun noviciaat hebben de meesten hun eerste studies met succes vol-bracht; een drietal heeft zich bekwaamd in de drukkerij of in de kleermakerij van het St.-Gregoriushuis. Intussen had de Congregatie in die jaren ook tegenslagen te verwerken: Frater M. Egidius Balk, die de communiteit sedert zijn intrede had gesticht door zijn deugden, door zijn wakkere arbeidzaamheid en zijn blijmoedig karakter, werd op 29 januari 1889, na een kortstondige ziekte, opgeroepen tot de hemelse beloning, op de jeugdige leeftijd van 26 jaren. In hem ver-loor de Congregatie een ijverig lid en de jeugd een bekwame opvoeder en onderwijzer. Dit verlies werd reeds spoedig gevolgd door twee andere, niet minder pijnlijk. De aspiranten frater Lebuïnus De Vent en frater Paulus Schwering werden, nadat zij enkele maanden in de overbevolkte schoolklassen waren werkzaam geweest, ernstig ziek en voor alle arbeid onbe-kwaam. Na een geduldig lijden van enkele weken en na het ontvangen van de H. Sacramenten en het afleggen van de H. Geloften gaven beiden in blije offervaardigheid hun ziel terug aan God, op de leeftijd van nauwelijks 20 jaren. Frater Lebuïnus op 26 oktober 1889, frater Paulus op 7 januari 1890.
