Hij kwam in 1832 als adelborst op het Instituut te Medemblik, werd in 1835 adelborst 1e kl., doorliep de verschillende officiersrangen. Bij de reorganisatie van het onderwijs der adelborstenj, en het oprichten van een opleiding te Willemsoord, was hij van 1854-1857 oudste officier-instructeur aldaar. Van 1866 tot april 1869 was hij equipagemeester op de werf te Willemsoord, eerst in den rang van kapitein-luitenant ter zee, en van 16 jan. 1867 af als kapitein ter zee. In 1875 aanvaardde hij de betrekking van directeur en commandant der marine te Amsterdam, nadat hij 1 mei 1874 was benoemd tot schout-bij-nacht, waarop met 1 mei 1876 de bevordering tot vice-admiraal volgde. In 1877 verwisselde hij de betrekking te Amsterdam met die van Commandant der zeemacht en chef van het Departement van Marine in Ned. Indië, dat hij bleef tot maart 1880. Gepensioneerd 1 juni 1880, hij had toen 21 jaren in de koloniën en tusschen de keerkringen doorgebracht., Zie Marineblad 1893/93
