    De molen stond ter plaatse van het voormalig kasteel de Kinkhorst in de Domeinenmaten of de Kinkhorstlanden. Deze grond, die in het begin van de 16e eeuw eigendom was van Roelof van Munster, werd na vernieling van zijn kasteel 'de Kinkhorst' ten behoeve van de Domeinen van Drenthe in 1512 in beslag genomen. Het grootste gedeelte bestond uit laag hooiland, zogenaamden Maten.

    In 1614 en volgende jaren werde de Domeinenmaten door het Landschap bij gedeelten in erfpacht uitgegeven. Onder andere de Poll van de Kinkhorst in 1614 aan Jan Laurents, schulte te Anlo om 'bij denzelven schults daerop een moolen gezet te worden'

    Op 11 november 1616 ontving de schout ook het recht van overpad naar het Adiep, waarna de molen gebouwd zal zijn. Blijkens een uitspraak van de Lotting van 24 juni 1633 waren de eigenaren van de Kinkhorstermolen pachters van de grond, waarop de molen stond, reikende totaan 'de binnenste grafte'. In 1679 blijkt de mulder Jan Jansen eigenaar van de molen te zijn.
    Reeds vroeg was de molen in eigendom van twee molenaars. In 1742 was Harm Coerts (Kinkhorst) molenaar op de molen en 'het andere muldershuys leegh'
