Jelle Durks Dam, timmerman, aannemer, overleden op 77-jarige leeftijd. Jelle Dam werd geboren in Harkema-Opeinde en wel in een gedeelte van het dorp dat toen bij Surhuizum hoorde. Zijn vader Durk en zijn moeder Hinke Pama hadden zeven kinderen, allen jongens en Jelle was daarvan de jongste. Evenals zijn broers is hij in een zogenaamde spitkeet -een heidehut- opgegroeid en heeft hij als kind de nijpende armoede van de negentiende eeuw aan den lijve ervaren.
Dat hij iets meer heeft mogen leren dan andere kinderen onder dezelfde omstandigheden is vooral te danken aan de plaatselijke hoofdonderwijzer, meester Dijkstra. Deze zag iets in de jongen en gaf hem wat bijlessen, zodat Jelle in Buitenpost de Normaalschool kon bezoeken. Hij verliet deze voortijdig, omdat zijn medeleerlingen naar zijn mening hem niet als hun gelijke wilden accepteren.
Toch had hij een zekere ontwikkeling weten te verwerven, veel meer dan zijn schoonouders en zijn moeder, die in 1884 op Jelles huwelijksdag verklaarden, dat ze hun naam niet konden zetten. Jelle trouwde toen met Neeltje Veenstra. Neeltje had maar weinig schoolgegaan. Al heel jong moest ze meehelpen de kost voor het gezin te verdienen. Ze hielp heide plukken voor het binden van boenders en biezen snijden voor het vlechten van matten. Ze kon evenmin als haar ouders lezen of schrijven, maar had wel met veel moeite geleerd haar handtekening te zetten.
Jelle Dam was zeker niet onverschillig waar het zijn positie betrof in de eenvoudige samenleving van zijn streek. Na het afbreken van zijn studie voor onderwijzer had hij een beroep geleerd dat meer bekwaamheid vereiste en hoger aanzien verschafte dan los werkman. Hij was timmerman geworden en werd door zijn omgeving als een bekwaam vakman beschouwd.
Dam was erg actief in het sociale leven. Hij schreef een toneelstuk over de toestand op de heide. De ruimere ontwikkeling die Dam verwierf door veel te lezen, maakte het hem later mogelijk een leidende rol in de opkomende socialistische beweging te spelen. Hij heeft zich ingezet voor de Bond voor Algemeen Kies- en Stemrecht en was later actief in de Friesche Volkspartij, waarin ook de S.D.B. een rol speelde.
Aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw verhuisde Jelle Dam naar de Parken te Opende, na eerst korte tijd in Surhuisterveen gewoond te hebben. Hij werd timmerbaas en heeft daar met behulp van zijn zoons menige woning gebouwd. In 1935 overleed hij te Boelenslaan na een langdurige ziekte.
