According to Ancestry Family tree of Brian Leslie McFarlane, George may have been born in 1823 in Portsmouth, England and living in Hampshire in 1841 with his mother and siblings (he would have been 17 years old) - This information may be incorrect.

George married Eliza Ann (Wright) prior to them immigrating to Australia. George was considerably older than Eliza as he was born in 1814 and she in 1831.

George and Eliza landed in Adelaide, South Australia where their eldest daughter was born, before they travelled to Victoria, to settle in Ballarat for George to work in the goldmines. Their second daughter and two youngest children, both sons, were born in Ballarat, Victoria. The youngest boy was born not long before George died in a mining accident.
