nb. Tot medio 1945 lag dit provinciestadje op Duits grondgebied en was het onderdeel van de Duitse provincie Silezië. Na WOII, toen Silezië als een van de zogeheten Westgebieden onder Pools bestuur kwam, is de regio het toneel geweest van een ingrijpende etnische zuivering waarbij de Duitse bevolking massaal werd verdreven naar het Duitse grondgebied ten westen van de rivieren Oder en Neisse. Vaak gingen deze uitwijzingen met geweld gepaard. Zo werden Duitse meisjes en vrouwen stelselmatig het slachtoffer van verkrachtingen. Overigens was een deel van de Duitse bevolking van Hirschberg al eerder naar het westen gevlucht uit angst voor het oprukkende Rode Leger. De Poolse autoriteiten doopten de stad om tot Jelenia Góra.

August heeft volgens zijn zoon Dieter, tijdens WOII zijn achternaam Krakowski officieel laten wijzigen in Karsten om het meer Duits te laten klinken. Dus Marie Trox en August Krakowski werden Marie en August Karsten. Omdat de jongste zoon Helmut destijds onder 21 jaar was, werd ook zijn achternaam gewijzigd in Karsten.
Alle andere broers en zus behielden de naam Krakowski.
