Op 24 april 2010 overleed in het Rosa Spier Huis te Laren Mathilde Stuiveling, geboren jkvr. Van Vierssen Trip, geboren te Rotterdam op 28 maart 1907. Sinds Thilde van Vierssen Trip begin jaren '30 in de Groningse collegebanken Garmt Stuiveling ontmoette, heeft zij - dochter van een Rotterdamse rechter - zich ogenschijnlijk gedragen als de vrouw van de zoon van de Gronings-Friese schoolmeester met SDAP-voorkeur, Pieter Stuiveling. Tot in het overlijdensbericht is zij 'echtgenote van Garmt'. Bescheiden op de achtergrond van de bekendheid en populariteit van Garmt was Thilde wel degelijk literair actief. In 1939 verzorgde zij een bloemlezing van Verhalen in de bekende reeks Bongerd-boekjes. Tien verhalen van eigen hand, deels eerder verschenen in De Vlaamse Gids en Rekenschap, werden onder het pseudoniem Merijn Trip gebundeld uitgegeven in 1972 onder de titel Groen geheimschrift. Een reeds in 1975 in het Rotterdams Jaarboekje verschenen opstel van haar over De school van Leopold kreeg in 1986 een bibliofiele uitgave als Sjaalmancahier 17.
Even warm als ze haar herinneringen aan vrienden-letterkundigen op schrift heeft gesteld, was ook de ontvangst en belangstelling voor eenieder die in het gastvrije huis aan de Hilversumse Diependaalselaan ontvangen werd. Het door de adellijke en ambtelijke Rotterdamse kringen bij voorbaat als mesalliance beschouwde huwelijk van Thilde en Garmt hebben beiden met volle overtuiging tot Garmts overlijden in 1985 in stand gehouden. Zij moet het als een bevrijding hebben beschouwd uit het milieu waarin zij was opgegroeid. Nog in de jaren '70 gaf zij als verklaring voor het serveren van dranken (uiteraard zonder alcohol!) na de lunch het feit dat het omstoten van een glas tijdens het eten in haar kindertijd langdurige traumatische gevolgen had.
Geen trauma hebben beiden overgehouden aan een auto-ongeluk. Omdat Garmt niet over een rijbewijs beschikte, reed Thilde hem vaak kriskras door het land naar allerlei spreekbeurten. Eén keer belandden ze met auto en al in een sloot. Nadat een belendende boer de auto uit de sloot getrokken had, leende Garmt van hem droge kleren en hield alsnog zijn spreekbeurt.
Op de receptie bij haar honderdste verjaardag was ze al een klein beetje minder stralend middelpunt van het feest in die zin dat ze de receptie niet meer staand kon afnemen, maar haar belangstelling voor al diegenen die haar toen passeerden, was onverminderd aanwezig.
