Notes about Susara Maria De Wet

Lotharius erkende de Frankische traditie niet dat de eigendom van de vader verdeeld werd onder zijn zoons. Dit leidde tot een bloedige strijd tussen hem en zijn broer Lodewijk de Duitser en halfbroer Karel de Kale bij de dood van zijn vader in 840.

Uiteindelijk werd het geschil beslecht door het Verdrag van Verdun in 843. Lotharius kreeg het Middenrijk -door zijn militaire nederlagen kon hij niet op meer rekenen- én de keizerstitel.

Bij zijn dood in 855 werd het rijk van Lotharius bij het Verdrag van Prüm verdeeld onder zijn drie zoons. Lotharius II kreeg het koninkrijk Lotharingen, dit is ongeveer de Nederlanden, de Elzas en het moderne Lotharingen. Karel de Jonge kreeg het koninkrijk Bourgondië, dit is zowat heel het stroomgebied van de Rhône in Zwitserland en Frankrijk. Lodewijk II werd dan, als oudste zoon, keizer van het Heilige Roomse Rijk en kreeg het koninkrijk Italië, dit is het noorden van het moderne Italië, tot en met Rome.

Lotharius I trad zes dagen voor zijn dood in bij de benedictijnen van de abdij Prüm, waar hij ook begraven werd. Hij wordt als heilige vereerd. Zijn gedachtenis is steeds op 29 september.
