    Vanaf hun trouwen tot aan hun overlijden bewonen ze het kleine huisje in de Doelenstraat. Het contact met de buren is goed en vriendelijk. Geertje maakt wekelijks de Katholieke kerk schoon en bezoekt iedere dag de mis om 7 uur. Jacobus was arbeider, maar kon bij iedereen aan het werk. Zijn belangrijkste bezigheid was bij de aannemers Janus de Koning en Siem Kraay. Bekende aannemers in het begin van deze eeuw, die o. a bij de bouw van het stoom-gemaal "de ijzeren man" bij het strandbad waren betrokken. Ook bouwden ze betonnen bruggen en andere grote klussen. Hier was Jacobus van Dijk opperman.
    Op de wekelijkse kaasmarkt was hij aanwezig als "kaasstapelaar". Het laden van de kaasburries met de kaas, die de boeren met hun schuitjes aanvoerden.. Onregelmatig werkte hij in de kaaspakhuizen (o.a. Gestam) en hielp hij Toon Rossenaar, als die hulp nodig had voor het laden/lossen van een vrachtauto.
    Jacobus was niet groot van postuur, maar heeft veel werk gedaan. Zijn bijnaam was "de Por". Een wat onverklaarbare aanduiding, maar die gemakkelijk was daar er nog enkele naamgenoten in Edam rondliepen, zoals J.van Dijk (de koopman) en J.van Dijk (Dapper).
    Volgens Joh. Schardam, de oud-directeur van de kaashandel "de Gestam" heeft hij Jaap van Dijk goed gekend. Niet alleen omdat hij onregelmatig wel eens bij hen werkte, maar vooral omdat ze een gezamenlijke hobby hadden, n. l. het houden van postduiven. Volgens Joh. Schardam was "de Por' een goede duiven-melker.
    Op 05-11-1955 overlijdt Jacobus van Dijk te Edam. Ruim 10 jaar later, op 04-03-1966, volgt Geertje Kloot haar man in de dood en wordt begraven in het zelfde graf op de Katholieke begraafplaats aan het Middelier Dijkje te Edam
