Notes about Willem Nassau-Dillenburg van (De Rijke)

Willem de Rijke was de zoon van Jan V van Nassau-Dillenburg en Elisabeth van Hessen-Marburg. Hij huwde aanvankelijk Walburga van Egmont, met wie hij twee kinderen kreeg. Na het overlijden van Walburga huwde hij Juliana van Stolberg. Uit dit huwelijk had hij twaalf kinderen (5 zoons en 7 dochters). Zijn bekendste zoon is Willem van Oranje.


Willem de Rijke was aanvankelijk rooms-katholiek. Later was hij gematigd Luthers. Wel stemde hij er in toe dat zijn zoon Willem een rooms-katholieke opvoeding zou krijgen aan het hof in Brussel. In 1544 was Willem erfgenaam geworden van het prinsdom Oranje, op voorwaarde dat hij aan het hof in Brussel zou worden opgevoed. Willem de Rijke bracht zijn zoon zelf naar Brussel. Naar de gewoonte van die tijd werd de erfenis van Oranje vooral aanvaard met het oog op de familiebelangen.


Willem de Rijke overleed in 1559. Zijn zoon Jan werd opvolger op de Dillenburg. Het thans in Nederland regerende vorstenhuis stamt af van deze zoon Jan. Daarmee is Willem de Rijke een rechtstreekse voorvader van koningin Beatrix en kroonprins Willem-Alexander.
