Meerten Hendriksz Tromp werd zowel met zijn voornaam als met zijn achternaam vernoemd naar zijn moeder's vader Maerten Pietersz Tromp. Blijkbaar was het in die tijd niet ongewoon dat het kind dan ook de achternaam erfde. Het zelfde deed zich voor bij Gerrit Claesz CeesJannen, die Buijs of Buijser genoemd werd en bij Cornelis Willemsz Oor, die in sommige aktes Broer genoemd werd naar zijn grootvader Cornelis Broer.
