Notes about Betjen Hemelrijk

Betjen van Gelder-Hemelrijk was op 16 Maart 1928 weduwe van Jacob van Gelder geworden. Tot in Mei 1943 woonde zij op de Amstelveenseweg maar op 28 Mei 1943 werd zij opgepakt en afgevoerd naar Westerbork waar zij in barak 64 werd ondergebracht. Zij begon onmiddellijk pogingen te ondernemen om aan deportatie te ontkomen, wat uiteindelijk niet is gelukt. Op haar registratiekaarten van de Joodse Raad staan de onderstaande aantekeningen vermeld:

Op 30 Mei blijkt dat Betjen Hemelrijk vermeld staat op de Palestina lijst en op dezelfde datum staat op de Joodse Raadkaart handmatig genoteerd “Albersheimverklaring”(een medische verklaring op grond waarvan men kon aantonen lichamelijk geschikt te zijn voor het Pionierswerk).

Op 2 Juni 1943 blijkt d.m.v. een “blauwe Z stempel”, “Zurückstellung” aan Betjen Hemelrijk verleend, wat een voorlopig uitstel van deportatie betekende.

Op 4 Juni 1943 antwoord van de Expositur: “Antwoord uitgereikt”. “Verzoek ingediend”.

Op 26 Juni bericht de Emigratie afdeling: “Telegrambevestiging Rode Kruis ter uitreiking”.

Op 28 Juli blijkt dat de aanwezige stukken onvoldoende zijn voor een Palestina verzoek.

Op 5 Augustus 1943 bericht van de emigratieafdeling: “Reeds getelegrafeerd; verwachten spoedig bericht omtrent certificaat”.

Op 10 Augustus 1943 bevestigt de emigratieafdeling van de Joodse Raad de verzoeken van het Rode Kruis per telegram.

Op 25 Augustus 1943 is vermeld dat verdere stappen geen doel hebben.

Betjen van Gelder-Hemelrijk werd op de dag daarvoor, op 24 Augustus 1943 op transport gesteld naar Auschwitz, waar zij na aankomst op 27 Augustus 1943 onmiddellijk in de gaskamers van Auschwitz-Birkenau werd vermoord.
