Het gebied van de Choorstraat was al sinds de tijd van de Romeinen een handelsplaats. Er lag een ‘vicus’, zoals de Romeinen hun handelsnederzettinkje naast hun legerkamp (het latere Domplein) noemden. Het zal geen toeval geweest zijn dat de Utrechters hier ook in de middeleeuwen hun eerste volwaardige handelswijk stichtten.
Stathe, zo noemden de middeleeuwers het eerste echte wijkje van Utrecht. Ze creëerden een centraal plein, en daaromheen bouwden ze hun houten huisjes. Midden op het plein kwam een kerk speciaal voor de burgers en de handel. Dat was de Buurkerk, die nu nog steeds met haar stompe toren een opvallend onderdeel van de Utrechtse skyline is – het is de kerk waar nu Museum Speelklok in zit.
Iedereen blij, totdat de handelaren gingen klagen. De Utrechters hadden de kerk door de eeuwen heen uitgebreid, en dat was ten koste gegaan van de ruimte op het handelsplein en de doorgaande wegen. En dat, terwijl de handel ook verveelvoudigd was. Uiteindelijk leidde dat tot een rigoureuze beslissing: de Utrechters sloopten de achterkant van de kerk. Precies op die plek loopt nu een straat met een verlenging naar de Stadhuisbrug, die ze naar het gesloopte gedeelte van de kerk hebben vernoemd. De achterkant van een kerk heet namelijk een koor. En ‘choor’, dat is simpelweg een ouderwetse spelling daarvan. Zo goor blijkt het er dus niet te zijn.
