    Geschichte des Konzentrationslagers in Hersbruck

    Das Konzentrationslager Hersbruck war "nur" ein Außenlager des KZ Flossenbürg. Doch seine Größe, Struktur und der Errichtungszweck lassen es uns als ein eigenständiges Lager betrachten. Es war nach Dachau und Flossenbürg das drittgrößte KZ in Süddeutschland. Als Nazideutschland den Krieg längst verloren hatte, sollten KZ-Häftlinge in den Berg Houbirg bei Happurg eine unterirdische Motorenfabrik für Jagdflugzeuge bauen - sicher vor alliierten Bombenangriffen. Im Mai 1944 begannen die Arbeiten
    Ein leerstehendes Kasernengebäude des Reichsarbeitsdienstes diente der SS als Unterkunft und Verwaltungsgebäude. Es wurden siebzehn Baracken für die Häftlinge errichtet. 2000 bis 6000 Häftlinge befanden sich ab August ’44 im Lager, überwiegend politisch Verfolgte und Gefangene jüdischen Glaubens. Menschen aus mindestens 23 Nationen waren im KZ Hersbruck
    Vom August 1944 bis Anfang April 1945 gab es in Hersbruck ein KZ-Lager, nicht einmal ein ganzes Jahr lang. Die Häftlingssklaven mussten im Berg Houbirg bei Happurg eine unterirdische Stollenanlage ausschachten, die sogenannten Doggerstollen. Darin sollte eine unterirdische Rüstungsfabrik eingerichtet werden.
    Das Lager war für 2000 Häftlinge konzipiert, im März 1945 befanden sich jedoch 6500 Personen darin, mehr als Hersbruck damals Einwohner hatte. Während dieser acht Monate kamen 3500 Häftlinge ums Leben, in der Winterzeit 700 – 800 Menschen pro Monat. Nachdem das Lager im April 1945 geräumt worden war, verloren auf dem Todesmarsch nach Dachau noch einmal etwa 500 Menschen das Leben

    Das Lager war maximal 430 Meter lang und 140 bis 240 Meter breit. Der Umfang betrug etwa 1200 Meter, die Fläche etwa 7,5 ha. Es war ringsum mit Stacheldraht umzäunt und wurde von zehn Wachtürmen aus bewacht. Die 19 Baracken bestanden größtenteils aus Holz und waren für je 200 Menschen geplant. Im Februar 1945 waren jedoch etwa 6000 Menschen darin eingepfercht. Die vier Baracken des sogenannten Krankenreviers waren mit 1000 bis 2000 Menschen so gut wie immer hoffnungslos überbelegt. Diese blieben, wie auch die anderen Baracken selbst im Winter meist unbeheizt.
    In den wenigen Monaten seines Bestehens durchliefen etwa 10 000 Häftlinge das Lager. Viele starben an Schwäche, Ruhr, Flecktyphus, Tuberkulose und anderen Krankheiten. Insgesamt fanden etwa 4000 Häftlinge den Tod. Am 28. Februar 1945 waren nach einer Stärkemeldung an das Hauptlager folgende Gefangene im Konzentrationslager Hersbruck:
