Nico ter Haak met zijn vriend Jacob Overpelt leerden twee vriendinnen kennen, Leny van Garderen en Leida Meerman, en de vrienden hadden het er onderling over wie welk meisje zou vragen om mee uit te gaan.
Ze trouwden allen binnen 2 maanden en bleven hun leven lang vrienden. Na de dood van Leny (1939) en Jacob (1943) trouwde Nico met Leida.

Nico vond het wel handig dat Lena wees was; geen gedoe met familie.
