    Als men weet dat door de bezetting de honger in de stad zo groot was dat zelfs de honden, katten en ratten werden opgegeten dan begrijpt men dat het aanbieden van de duiven een opoffering was.
    Zijn moeder overleefde het Leidens ontzet (zondag 3 oktober 1574): In de oorkonde van zoon Willem staat dat hij "liever gehadt heeft dese syne geboortige stede alle mogelycke dienste ende vordernisse te doen/ ende de spyse/ die tot versadinge van den honger van hem/ syne outbejaerde moeder ende broederen/ eenigsins hadde mogen dienen/ heurluyden hongerygen buycken te onthouden".

Op 3 oktober 1578, vier jaar na Leidens ontzet, namens de stad Leiden de oorkonde ondertekend waarbij aan Willem Cornelisz. het recht werd toegekend om zich 'Van Duijvenbode' te noemen. Bovendien werd hem (als eerste burger in de Nederlanden) het recht toegekend om een familiewapen te voeren. Dit wapen bestaat uit de twee rode (kruislings
liggende) Leidse sleutels met in elk van de vier kwadranten een blauw duifje. In de wapenbrief staat dit wapen afgebeeld, getekend door de tekenaar Hans Liefrinc.
