Een Soltstede is oorspronkelijk een huisplaats binnen het dorp, waarvan de eigenaar "gerechtigd" is in de marke; het bezit van een Soltstede geeft recht op een "waardeel" in de marke; behalve stemrecht en bestuursrecht in de marke, omvat een waardeel ook materiële rechten, zoals landbouw op een deel van de esgrond, weiderecht voor vee, recht om te plaggen, recht van houtkap, recht om turf te steken, etc.; Deze Soltsteden zijn ook in Coevorden blijven bestaan, toen het een stad werd, hetgeen soms aanleiding gaf tot conflicten
