Vrijwel alle Nederlandse leden van de familie Schueler zijn nakomelingen van Anton August Schöler (o met umlaut; ook geschreven als August Anton Schoeler), een zadelmaker uit 1777 uit Olfen (Westfalen, Duitsland), die zich in 1810 in Barneveld vestigde. In 1812 trouwde hij Maria Hoogland uit Renswoude, na haar overlijden trouwde hij voor de tweede maal in 1822 met Hendrica Maria Rabeling uit Wageningen.

Er ontstond een zeer uitgebreide familie, waarvan de achternaam via verschillende tussenvormen in enkele decennia definitief Schueler werd.
Familieleden wonen nu in Nederland, Frankrijk, België, Canada, de Verenigde Staten en opnieuw in Duitsland. De Duiste Westfaalse voorvaderen zijn vrijwel geheel in kaart gebracht.
