Huwelijkspolitiek speelde indertijd een belangrijke rol om macht en geld van de ene op de volgende generatie door te geven, zo ook bij de familie Trip. De dochters van Elias Trip (nr. 8) verbonden zich alle drie met een telg van het uit Antwerpen afkomstige koopliedengeslacht Coymans. Sophia, de oudste van het drietal, trouwde in 1634 met Joan Coymans (1601-1657), die samen met zijn broer Balthasar (zie nr. 88) leiding gaf aan het grootste handelshuis met een jaarlijkse omzet van 4 miljoen gulden. Alleen al aan provisie verdiende de firma in de jaren 1649-1659 300.000 gulden. Na het voortijdig overlijden van beide broers nam Sophia Trip in 1657 noodgedwongen de leiding van het handelshuis over. Aangezien haar oudste zoon met twaalfjaar nog te jong was om haar te assisteren, riep ze de hulp in van haar neef én schoonzoon Joan Huydecoper (1625-1704).

Sophia Trip kocht samen met haar neef Jean Bernard (nr. 180) haar tweede zomerverblijf. Naast Westerhout in Beverwijk verwierf ze voor 40.000 gulden de fraaie hofstede De Kruidberg in Velsen, inclusief bossen en landerijen. Twee jaar later, direct na het overlijden van Sophia, verkochten haar zonen Johan en Balthasar de buitenplaats aan stadhouder Willem III.
