Notes about Hendrik ten Berge

Henk werd geboren in Den Haag aan de Bezuidenhoutseweg op 5 december 1924. Op 12 jarige leeftijd, in 1937, overleed zijn moeder Engelberthana een galblaasoperatie. Henk en zijn oudere broer Willem werden op een kostschool geplaatst en na het behalen van het HBS diploma, ging Henk studeren aan de Hogere Zeevaart School in Amsterdam aan de Mauritskade. Hier behaalde hij in 1943 zijn officiersdiploma. Direct daarna werd Henk door de Nazi's opgeroepen om te dienen in het Duitse leger, hetgeen Henk weigerde. Daarop dook Henk onder en verbleef de laatste jaren van de 2de Wereldoorlog op de Friese boerderij van de familie Hiemstra in Slappeterp, bij Menaldum. (Vermoedelijk was dit familie, want Henk had het altijd over tante Grietsjen.Bovendien lijkt het onlogisch dat Henk bij een wildvreemde boerderij aanbelt met het vriendelijke verzoek om de rest van de oorlog bij hen te mogen blijven logeren). Na de oorlog ging Henk eerst varen op de vrachtvaart en in 1947 monsterde hij aan op de Nieuw Amterdam, een cruiseschip van de Holland America Lijn. In 1948 ontmoette Henk tijdens en bezoek van het schip aan Rio de Janeiro Vera Ligthart, met wie hij op 12 juli 1950 in Amsterdam is getrouwd. Hun huwelijksreis ging naar het hotel aan de Galemadamme in Friesland. Henk verliet de zee en ging eerst werken voor zijn schoonvader en later voor de firma Sydney Ross. In 1959 vertrok Henk naar Nederland om marketingdirecteur te worden bij Wyeth Laboratoria NV. Vera en haar 3 kinderen (inmiddels waren ook Adriaan en Michiel geboren) volgden Henk in 1960 per schip, de MS Kennemerland. Na eerst gewoond te hebben in Landsmeer, betrokken ze in januari 1961 een huis in Soest Zuid, aan de PC Hooftlaan 44. Op 19 juni 1962 werd dochter Cassandra geboren. In 1974 verhuisden Henk, Vera, Michiel en dochter Cassandra naar de Valkstraat 21 in Badhoevedorp. Henk was inmiddels opgeklommen tot marketing directeur bij Wyeth. In 1989 ging Henk met pensioen en ging hij freelance werken voor ,,Het Witte Weekblad'' in Badhoevedorp. Daarnaast werkte Henk pro deo voor ,,Plan Nederland'', waar hij brieven uit het Engels vertaalde. Modelbouw was zijn grote hobby, zowel schepen als poppenhuizen en later poppenhuis meubeltjes. Regelmatig kreeg hij opdrachten vanuit het buitenland. In 2001 verhuisden Henk en Vera naar een luxe appartement aan het Julianaplein 43 in Leidschendam. Daar werd Henk ziek en langzamerhand gingen al zijn spierfunctie achteruit. Geestelijk was Henk tot het laatst in topconditie, maar praten, lopen, bewegen slikken ging niet meer. Om te eten en drinken kreeg Henk een maagsonde. Henk kon niet meer existeren zonder hulp en uiteindelijk overleed hij op 3 maart 2007 aan een maagbloeding.
