Gerard doorliep de lagere school te Klazienaveen und ging daarna werken op diverse boerderijen. Eind dertiger jaren vertrok hij naar Twente om daar ook te gaan werken als boerenknecht op verschillende boerderijen. Tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog was hij in de kost bij de familie Kosters te Enter. Inmiddels had hij op de kermis te Bornebroek in 1939 Dina leren kennen waarna ze in 1944 te Wierden trouwden. Ze gingen wonen in een klein huisje tegenover de kerk te Enter und daar werden hunvier zonen geboren. Het huisje van de familie Hemel (had maar een slaapkamer) werd veel te klein und daarom werd er verhuist naar een gemeentewoning aan de Julianastraat te Enter. Hiet woonden ze ongeveer vier jaar waarna ze verhuisden naar een oud huis aan de rondweg even buiten Enter. In 1968 werd daar een nieuw huis gebouwd. Na de oorlog vond Gerard Hemel tot 1950 werk bij het waterschap waarna hij in dienst trad van de gemeente Wierden. Hier ws hij o.a. 2 jaar in dienst als badmeester op het zwembad van Enter waarna hij in 1966 werd bevorderd tot voorwerker. Zijn hobby's waren het verzorgen van zijn eigen vee zoals melkkoeien und mestvarkens.
