Na het afstuderen van Holland High School in 1943, diende hij in de US Army Air Corps tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog als een pilot van een multi-engine vliegtuigen en ook als een vlucht ingenieur van de B29. Na zijn ontslag genoot hij verschillende carrières, beginnend als vlieginstructeur. Vanuit vliegtuigen ging hij naar treinen en werkte voor de spoorlijn in Bridgman, MI. Hij besloot toen om terug te keren naar Nederland waar hij ging van treinen naar boten. Nelson werkte Chris Craft voor vele jaren. als inspecteur daar werd hij bekend onder de bijnaam van "Snoopy". Op zaterdagmiddag zou je hem vinden het beheer van het schaatsen op het North Side Roller Rink in Park Township. Met zijn liefde voor oude muziek en kinderen, heeft hij een geweldige job. Na Chris Craft, veranderde hij carrière en ging van boten in het water. In 1991 ging hij met pensioen van de Grand Rapids Water Filtration Facility.
Nelson was een bescheiden en vriendelijke man. Hij was bekend om eerlijk wezen, eerlijk, een man van zijn woord, en God vrezen. Hij heeft plezier in tijd doorbrengen met zijn familie en was een uitstekend rolmodel en leraar. . Hij bracht vele gelukkige uren op hout werken, het maken van molens, het verzamelen van verschillende klinkende klokken, vogels kijken, en vooral kijken naar de "sky-blauw-roze" zonsondergang met uitzicht "Big Red". Nelson was een lid van de Gereformeerde Kerk van communautaire Erfgoed Nederland. Hij hield van zijn kleine kerk en gemeente.
